Posted: June 26, 2012

People are risking their health by working on smartphones, tablets and laptops after they have left the office, according to the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy.

It says people have become "screen slaves" and are often working while commuting or after they get home.

The society said poor posture in these environments could lead to back and neck pain.

Unions said people needed to learn to switch off their devices.

A former U.S. president is accusing the current president of sanctioning the "widespread abuse of human rights" by authorizing drone strikes to kill suspected terrorists.

Jimmy Carter, America's 39 th president, denounced the Obama administration for "clearly violating" 10 of the 30 articles of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, writing in a New York Times op-ed on Monday that the "United States is abandoning its role as the global champion of human rights."

"Instead of making the world safer, America's violation of international human rights abets our enemies and alienates our friends," Carter wrote.

Can you learn to play the piano on your sleep?

Posted: June 25, 2012

Soft tones during sleep creep into the napping brain and strengthen playing skills, researchers report online June 24 in Nature Neuroscience.

The results don't mean that after a nighttime Beethoven sonata, a piano novice will wake up with the ability to play it. But the results do suggest that an existing skill can be sharpened during a nap, says study coauthor Ken Paller of Northwestern University in Evanston, Ill.

Spanish Economy Minister Luis de Guindos asked for up to 100 billion euros ($125 billion) in a letter to Euro group chairman Jean-Claude Juncker, saying the final amount of assistance would be set at a later stage.

Posting on Facebook as rewarding as sex?

Posted: June 25, 2012

The reward given by a person's brain when a Facebook posting of theirs is viewed, liked and commented on has proven to be comparable in pleasure to the response from food and sex, according to a recent Harvard University study.

The research, which was published last month in an edition of Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, found that social media outlets give way to an increased rate of "self-disclosure." The increase in "self-disclosure" leads to a spike in the amount of dopamine produced based on the pleasure or anticipation of a reward as a result of a social-media post being viewed, according to the research.

The CULT of Apple - how workers are indoctrinated into a band of techno zealots

Posted: June 24, 2012

One manager said it was common for people offered jobs to burst into tears. But if the newly hired arrive as devotees, Apple's training course, which can range from a few days to a few weeks, depending on the job and locale, turns them into disciples.

Training commences with what is known as a "warm welcome." As new employees enter the room, Apple managers and trainers give them a standing ovation. The clapping often bewilders the trainees, at least at first, but when the applause goes on for several lengthy minutes they eventually join in.

"My hands would sting from all the clapping," says Michael Dow, who trained Apple employees for years in Providence, R.I.

There is more role-playing at Core training, as it's known, this time with pointers on the elaborate etiquette of interacting with customers. One rule: ask for permission before touching anyone's iPhone.

"And we told trainees that the first thing they needed to do was acknowledge the problem, though don't promise you can fix the problem," said Shane Garcia, the one-time Chicago manager. "If you can, let them know that you have felt some of the emotions they are feeling. But you have to be careful because you don't want to lie about that."

The phrase that trainees hear time and again, which echoes once they arrive at the stores, is "enriching people's lives." The idea is to instill in employees the notion that they are doing something far grander than just selling or fixing products. If there is a secret to Apple's sauce, this is it: the company ennobles employees. It understands that a lot of people will forgo money if they have a sense of higher purpose.

AMA recommends pre-market safety testing of GMOs

Posted: June 24, 2012

This week the American Medical Association (AMA) voted to revise policy, recommending that foods made with genetically modified organisms (GMOs) have mandatory pre-market safety testing. In the battle against foods made with GMOs, we'll take any bit of advancement as a small victory. But far more needs to be done.

The AMA held a meeting in Chicago to discuss the change, according to the Chicago Tribune. It was there that they voted on the policy, sending a clear signal to the Food and Drug Administration that more needs to be done to answer the calls of concerned consumers when it comes to GMO foods. Previously, the AMA has also voiced potential support for the labeling of GMOs.

As it stands, GMO foods are not subject to any testing or measures beyond what any other foods are. Instead, they are "simply encouraged to engage in a voluntary safety consultation" with the FDA prior to releasing a GMO food onto the market. While the general public isn't privy to what goes on in these consultations, the FDAs stance on GMO foods would lead one to believe they are pretty unremarkable.

Some were hoping the AMA would come out in support of GMO labeling. More than one million Americans have signed a petition on the Just Label It website, sending a clear message to the FDA that we want to know what's in our food. Fifty countries worldwide have already passed such legislation, requiring GMO foods to be labeled as such.

James Lovelock lashes out at the new 'religion' of Green; we don't know for sure what's happening he says

Posted: June 23, 2012

Lovelock blasted greens for treating global warming like a religion.

"It just so happens that the green religion is now taking over from the Christian religion," Lovelock observed. "I don't think people have noticed that, but it's got all the sort of terms that religions use ... The greens use guilt. That just shows how religious greens are. You can't win people round by saying they are guilty for putting (carbon dioxide) in the air."

The Worst Household Cleaners in America

Posted: June 22, 2012

A squeaky-clean, spotless house brings a sense of pride to many Americans, but here's the toxic truth: something that should be making us feel good is actually making us sick. From cleaning ingredients powerful enough not just to cut through grease and grime, but also human bone and tissue to products labeled "nontoxic" and "green" that are in fact laced with hazardous ingredients, more than a few of the products on the market made Environmental Working Group's recent "EWG Database Cleaners Hall of Shame" list.

The release of this list of some of the worst cleaners sold in America comes several months before EWG is slated to unveil a first-of-its-kind database that will rank the safety of cleaners on the market. Due to be released this fall, the database will be similar to its popular Skin Deep Cosmetic Safety Database, unveiling problematic chemicals and rating products on toxicity.

While taking matters into your own hands and using green cleaning recipes is a great way to start detox your cleaning routine, it's also important to check under the sink to make sure you don't have any of the most dangerous products on the market in your home.

Here are some of the most toxic cleaning products on the market, according to EWG.

  • All-Purpose Cleaners
Simple Green Concentrated All-Purpose Cleaner - This product is anything but green. It contains 2-butoxyethanol, a solvent that soaks through the skin and damages red blood cells; even more dangerous is that some people miss the fine print and don't dilute it.

Korean shellfish may be contaminated with human feces, norovirus

FDA urges stores to remove Korean shellfish

(CNN) -

Korean shellfish shipped to the United States may have been exposed to human feces and potentially contaminated with norovirus, the Food and Drug Administration warned distributors, retailers and other food service operators Thursday.

After evaluating Korea's shellfish sanitation program, the FDA said it found significant deficiencies, including inadequate sanitary controls, ineffective management of land-based pollution sources and the presence of norovirus in shellfish growing areas.

The agency said all fresh, frozen, canned and processed oysters, clams, mussels and whole and roe-on scallops - known as molluscan shellfish - that entered the country from Korea should not be sold.

On May 1 the FDA removed Korean certified shippers of molluscan shellfish from the Interstate Certified Shellfish Shippers List. The list is published monthly by the FDA to show products that have been certified by the United States, Canada, New Zealand and Mexico. Korea was on this list but the agency said Korea's shellfish sanitation program no longer meets sanitation standards.

Killings of environmentalists appear to be on rise

Posted: June 22, 2012

BANGKOK (AP) - The eulogies called Chut Wutty one of the few remaining activists in Cambodia brave enough to fight massive illegal deforestation by the powerful. The environmental watchdog was shot by a military policeman in April as he probed logging operations in one of the country's last great forests.

Nisio Gomes was the chief of a Brazilian tribe struggling to protect its land from ranchers. Masked men gunned him down in November; his body, quickly dragged into a pickup, has not been seen since.

Around the world, sticking up for the environment can be deadly, and it appears to be getting deadlier.

People who track killings of environmental activists say the numbers have risen dramatically in the last three years. Improved reporting may be one reason, they caution, but they also believe the rising death toll is a consequence of intensifying battles over dwindling supplies of natural resources, particularly in Latin America and Asia.

Totally stupid news: Being 'Born-Again' Linked to More Brain Atrophy

Posted: June 22, 2012

Here's what the stupid health news is now claiming:

WEDNESDAY, May 25 (HealthDay News) -- Older adults who say they've had a life-changing religious experience are more likely to have a greater decrease in size of the hippocampus, the part of the brain critical to learning and memory, new research finds.

According to the study, people who said they were a "born-again" Protestant or Catholic, or conversely, those who had no religious affiliation, had more hippocampal shrinkage (or "atrophy") compared to people who identified themselves as Protestants, but not born-again.

The study is published online in PLoS ONE.

Economic collapse: Starving Greeks line up by the thousands for food handouts

Posted: June 22, 2012

Starving Greeks queued around the block for free food handouts yesterday as the country's politicians managed to end a crippling stalemate to form a coalition government.

Young children as well as the elderly waited in line in Athens to collect the parcels of fruit and vegetables donated by farmers from Crete to help ease the devastating austerity faced by many Greeks.

But as hungry people collected food, a few miles away a new conservative-led alliance was formed, vowing to renegotiate the country's strict European bailout in a bid to breath economic life back into the debt-stricken country.
