Council fights on against fluoride

Posted: October 25, 2012

BUNDABERG Regional Council is still holding on to the hope it will not be forced to fluoridate its drinking water.

The State Government is pushing ahead with the previous government's policy of forcing councils across Queensland to fluoridate their water.

The council had hoped to receive and exemption after talks with the LNP before the state election, but later Health Minister Lawrence Springborg said some councils would have to go ahead with the controversial proposal.

Mr Springborg mentioned Bundaberg by name in that statement.

Cr Alan Bush, a long-time opponent of the forced fluoridation of Bundaberg's water, has still not given up on the fight.

FDA allows Iowa to mix corn tainted with toxic mold chemical aflatoxin with regular corn crop

Posted: October 25, 2012

OMAHA (DTN) -- The U.S. Food and Drug Administration will allow grain handlers in Iowa to blend corn containing aflatoxin levels above 20 parts per billion with corn that has lower levels, according to a news release from the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship.

In recent weeks Iowa was one of several states that reported elevated levels of aflatoxin in early deliveries to elevators. Aflatoxin is a set of chemicals produced by molds that can be found on corn and other plants, brought on by drought, heat and damage to plants. Elevators typically dock farmers for corn with levels above 20 ppb, and reject loads at levels above 200.

In an FDA letter sent to the state this week, officials indicated that the move was only temporary.

Major Solar Flare Erupts From the Sun

Posted: October 24, 2012

The sun unleased a powerful solar flare late Monday (Oct. 22), releasing waves of radiation into space that have already caused a short radio blackout on Earth.

The flare erupted from the sunspot AR 11598 (short for Active Region 11598), and reached peak brightness at 11:22 p.m. EDT (0322 GMT this morning, Oct. 23), according to scientists working on NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO), a space telescope that constantly monitors the sun with high-definition cameras. It ranked as an X1.8 solar flare, one of the strongest types of solar flares, according to the U.S. Space Weather Prediction Center (SWPC) run by NOAA and the National Weather Service.

The same sunspot produced three strong flares before this one in just the two days since it became visible from Earth's perspective. "This means more flares are probably in the offing, and they will become increasingly Earth-directed as the sunspot turns toward our planet in the days ahead," astronomer Tony Phillips wrote on Spaceweather.com, a website that tracks skywatching and space weather events.

Lance Armstrong's downfall now complete

Posted: October 24, 2012

PARIS - There was an Armstrong who walked on the moon and another, Louis, who sang sweet jazz. But Lance Armstrong, seven-time Tour de France winner?

That never happened.

"He deserves to be forgotten in cycling," the sport's boss, Pat McQuaid, said Monday as he erased Armstrong's victories from the record books of the race that made him a global celebrity.

It felt - and was - truly momentous. The crash-landing in a spectacular plunge from grace. The moment of impact between the truth and years of lies. Official acceptance - first from the head of cycling's governing body, then from the boss of the Tour - that the fairytale of a cancer survivor who won the world's most storied bicycle race was, in fact, the biggest fraud in the history of sport.

"A landmark day for cycling," McQuaid, president of the International Cycling Union, said at a news conference in Geneva. "Lance Armstrong has no place in cycling."

Grandmas made humans live longer

Posted: October 23, 2012

SALT LAKE CITY, Oct. 24, 2012 - Computer simulations provide new mathematical support for the "grandmother hypothesis" - a famous theory that humans evolved longer adult lifespans than apes because grandmothers helped feed their grandchildren.

"Grandmothering was the initial step toward making us who we are," says Kristen Hawkes, a distinguished professor of anthropology at the University of Utah and senior author of the new study published Oct. 24 by the British journal Proceedings of the Royal Society B.

Monster Energy Drink Cited in Deaths

Posted: October 23, 2012

Five people may have died over the past three years after drinking Monster Energy, a popular energy drink that is high in caffeine, according to incident reports recently released by the Food and Drug Administration.

The reports, like similar filings with the F.D.A. in cases involving drugs or medical devices, do not prove a link between Monster Energy and the deaths or other health problems. The records were recently obtained under the Freedom of Information Act by the mother of a 14-year-old Maryland girl who died in December from a heart arrhythmia after drinking large cans of Monster Energy on two consecutive days.

Last week, Wendy Crossland, the mother of that teenager, filed a lawsuit against Monster Beverage, a publicly traded company in Corona, Calif., that used to be known asHansen Natural. The lawsuit charges that Monster failed to warn about the risks of its energy drinks; a spokeswoman for the company said last week that its products were safe and not the cause of the teenager's death.

New breast cancer therapy tied to more complications

Posted: October 22, 2012

(Reuters Health) - Women about to have breast cancer surgery may want to pay extra attention to the radiation treatment they could be offered afterward.

A new study shows a new and increasingly popular treatment called brachytherapy is tied to more wound and skin complications than the standard radiation technique.

Yet as many as one in six women on Medicare, the government's health insurance program for people over 65, end up getting the new therapy following breast-conserving surgery, researchers found.

Parents sue hospital for 'declaring son dead'

Posted: October 22, 2012

Chicago: The parents of an eight-year-old boy have sued a US hospital, alleging doctors pronounced their son dead though he was still alive, the Daily Mail reported on Sunday.

Doctors at a Chicago hospital allegedly refused to listen to desperate relatives who insisted he continued to move his eyes and body.

The lawsuit, filed this week, accuses Mercy Hospital and Medical Center of negligence and alleges that nearly five hours passed before staff agreed to perform a cardiac ultrasound, which showed Jaylen Dorsey's heart was beating, according to reports.

Jaylen, who suffers from severe brain damage, is bedridden and on a ventilator, was found unresponsive by his mother, Sheena Lane, on Feb 18. He was taken to Mercy Hospital and doctors there pronounced the boy dead.

TSA seeks to fire or suspend largest group of agents ever

Posted: October 19, 2012

Washington (CNN) -- The Transportation Security Administration said Friday it has started the process of firing 25 of its agents and suspending 19 others for not following screening procedures.

The 44 employees all worked in a checked-baggage screening room in Terminal B of Newark's Liberty International Airport, TSA spokesman David Castelveter told CNN in a written statement.

In November and December of 2011, they were caught on surveillance cameras not following proper screening protocols, an agency internal investigation revealed.
After passengers check their bags, TSA screeners are supposed to search the luggage with electronic scanners and open some bags by hand.

Top 10 Most Influential Whistleblowers

Posted: October 19, 2012

The subject of insiders -- or "whistleblowers" -- is somewhat tricky; anyone on the inside is often presumed to be compromised by their former allegiance. Nonetheless, the nature of government work is rooted in compartmentalization. So, perhaps the best indication as to whether whistleblowers have something valid to say is the level of persecution they have endured.

The following whistleblowers have endured a varying degree of pushback from the system, but are still around to reveal key points of information that make us all question what we are being told by our government and the corporate media.

Please listen to the video presentations of the following insiders who have used their positions to educate those on the outside about the machinations of people far more devious than ourselves. They follow in the footsteps of people such as Daniel Ellsberg, and are not the criminals that the U.S. government increasingly charges them as. Rather, these whistleblowers represent the highest level of activism and courage.

55 Facts About The Debt And U.S. Government Finances That Every American Voter Should Know

Posted: October 19, 2012

The future of the United States of America is being systematically destroyed by our politicians, but unfortunately most Americans don't really grasp exactly what is happening. 30 years ago, our national debt had just crossed the one trillion dollar mark. Just recently, it crossed the 16 trillion dollar mark. Prior to every election, politicians from both parties swear up and down that they will do something about our exploding debt, but it never happens. Once again this year, our politicians are making all kinds of grand promises about getting U.S. government finances under control.

But they are also promising all kinds of new plans and programs which are going to cost a lot more money on top of what we are already spending. For the average American, all of this can be incredibly confusing. That is why I have put together a list of facts about the debt and U.S. government finances below. These are things that every voter should know. The federal government is stealing more than a trillion dollars a year from our children and our grandchildren, and they are spending that money in some of the most foolish ways that you could ever imagine.

We have accumulated the largest mountain of debt in the history of the world, but our politicians just can't help themselves - they appear to be absolutely addicted to spending money. If we continue on the path that we are currently on, our entire financial system and our entire economy will be destroyed by all of this debt. Time is running out and urgent action is needed to address this crisis.

37 Good Reasons to Vote YES on Prop 37

Posted: October 18, 2012

There has been a lot of controversy and disinformation regarding the California State wide Proposition, Prop. 37, that will be voted on this coming November. It would require all food companies and farmers to label their products if they contain any GMO ingredients, and require them to remove the words "natural" if they do. Although this proposition is for California, this could affect labeling for food that is provided for most of the country and the entire world and force companies to be honest. Monopolies like Monsanto, DuPont, and Carghil (All biotech giants) have been fighting tooth and nail against this campaign. So The Media Speaks.com decided to look into many of the reasons that these corporations don't want people to know what they are eating, in fact, 37 of those reasons.

So here we go.

1. Consumers should have the right to choose and to know what they're eating.

'Cuddle Chemical' Oxytocin Relieves Alcohol Withdrawal

Posted: October 17, 2012

The "love hormone" oxytocin can relieve symptoms of withdrawal in people recovering from alcoholism, according to a small new study.

Research has long suggested that oxytocin - called the "love" or "hug" hormone for its role in social bonding - is a complicated chemical. It is released during orgasm and birth and other bonding moments between lovers or family members, but oxytocin may also help create the unhealthy ties that bind alcoholics and addicts to their drugs of choice.

Indeed, in rodents, oxytocin can successfully fight unpleasant alcohol and heroin withdrawal symptoms. And if given before the addiction even occurs, the hormone may even prevent the development of tolerance and symptoms of physical dependence.

Posted: October 17, 2012

Nike has severed its connections with Lance Armstrong, finally acknowledging the "seemingly insurmountable" evidence that that the seven-times Tour de France winner was a drugs cheat.

In a near-simultaneous statement, Armstrong said he would relinquish his position as chairman of Livestrong, the cancer charity he founded, in order to "spare the foundation any negative effects" after a damning report by the United States Anti-Doping Agency (Usada), whichconcluded he ran a sophisticated doping ring for years.

FOOD CRISIS SUMMIT: GOVERNMENTS SHOULD SCRAP BIOFUELS, NOT PUSH GM CROPS
Friends of the Earth International, October 16 2012

ROME (ITALY) / LONDON (UK) - As Governments gather in Rome today, World Food Day, to discuss the global food price crisis, Friends of the Earth International warns in a new report [1] that agriculture donors such as the United States and United Kingdom are pumping money into genetically modified (GM) crops at the cost of farming methods better suited to tackling hunger.

Since the advent of the food price crisis in 2008, some Governments have championed the 'sustainable intensification' of farming as a new way to increase yields without harming the environment.

The report investigates what adopting this approach has meant for donors and finds that despite its claim to support a variety of ecological farming methods, funding is still heavily skewed towards GM crops and business as usual intensive agriculture.

There are numerous reasons to skip the mainstream supermarket food and shop at an organic grocer, but just one of those reasons revolves around the effects of pesticides.

Unfortunately, pesticides attack your body on several fronts. Keep this list handy the next time you find yourself wondering if you should buy a carton of conventional strawberries rather than organic to potentially save a few pennies. Remember that all of the following conditions will cost you much more than money; the effects of pesticides will cost you your health.

The dreaded diagnosis of cancer has been linked in over 260 studies worldwide to agrochemicals. Worse, scientists have linked pesticides with several types of cancers, including that of the breast, prostate, brain, bone, thyroid, colon, liver, lung, and more. Some researchers from USC found that "those who lived within 500 meters of places where methyl bromide, captan and eight other organochlorine pesticides had been applied, they found, were more likely to have developed prostate cancer."
