The European Parliament has voted to reject GM maize 1507 from being authorized to be cultivated in European fields.
GM maize 1507, like Monsanto's Bt maize (MON810), has been genetically modified by Pioneer, a DuPont-owned company, to produce its own insecticide. In addition to this, it has also been altered to be resistant to the herbicidal chemical glufosinate, which has been found to be toxic to reproduction.
There were 385 votes rejecting the GM crop, 201 in favor and 30 abstaining.
European national governments will individually decide tomorrow whether or not to allow GM maize 1507 to be grown in their countries, so it is vital that people continue to voice their opinion on the matter. You can help by writing to European governments at
