Finally, a good use for it: Fuels made from sugar

Scientists at the University of Manchester have identified a biocatalyst which could produce chemicals found in ice-cream and household items such as soap and shampoo - possibly leading to the long-term replacement of chemicals derived from fossil fuels.

Scientists at the University of Manchester have identified a biocatalyst which could produce chemicals found in ice-cream and household items such as soap and shampoo - possibly leading to the long-term replacement of chemicals derived from fossil fuels.

Writing in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, the researchers have shown that the emerging field of synthetic biology can be used to manipulate hydrocarbon chemicals, found in soaps and shampoos, in cells.
This development, discovered with colleagues at the University of Turkuin Finland, could mean fuel for cars or household power supplies could be created from naturally-occurring fatty acids.

US continues to conduct mysterious nuclear tests in the desert

Posted: December 20, 2012

With little fanfare amongst the American corporate media, the United States has now conducted yet another nuclear test in the deserts of Nevada. The move was condemned by both Iran and two Japanese mayors, who stated that not only was the American test emblematic of the double standard held by America and the international community, but that it also endangered the progression to a nuclear-free world.

As reported by RT, it was announced by the National Nuclear Security Administration on Friday, Dec. 7 that the Nevada National Security Site "had successfully detonated plutonium in a deep shaft on Wednesday (Dec. 5) to test the safety and effectiveness of US nuclear weapons."

The Pollux subcritical experiment involved "a tiny sample" of plutonium bomb material and was carried out by scientists at the Los Alamos, New Mexico national laboratory and the Sandia National Laboratories.

Subcritical nuclear experiments have been conducted inside the United States since 1997 under the justification of helping "scientists understand how plutonium ages in the stockpile." The December 5 experiment, however, marks the twenty-seventh "subcritical experiment" conducted since 1992, when full-scale nuclear weapons tests were supposedly stopped.

Flame Fighting Chemicals Abundant in House Dust and Sofas

Posted: December 19, 2012

Chemicals are commonly added to furniture, carpeting, and even electronic devices to limit the risk of fire. But at what cost?

Two new studies published journal Environmental Science & Technology highlight the potential dangers of flame retardants - including chemicals linked to cancer and to hormone disruption - that are probably present in nearly every American home.

One of the two new studies focuses on sofa cushions. Researchers from Duke University, Boston University, and University of California Berkeley took cushions from sofas across the U.S. and found that there were suspect flame-retardant chemicals in 85% of them. The second study shows how those chemicals then likely migrate out of furniture and into the air we breathe. Scientists at Silent Spring Institute in Massachusetts analyzed household dust in California and found that, in most of the 16 homes tested, there was at least one chemical present at potentially unsafe levels.

"What's concerning about this is that so many of these chemicals we're finding are associated with hormone disruption or cancer, or haven't been tested," says Robin Dodson, a research scientist at Silent Spring Institute. "It's worrisome."

Are Bacteria Making You Hungry?

Posted: December 19, 2012

Over the last half decade, it has become increasingly clear that the normal gastrointestinal (GI) bacteria play a variety of very important roles in the biology of human and animals. Now Vic Norris of the University of Rouen, France, and coauthors propose yet another role for GI bacteria: that they exert some control over their hosts' appetites. Their review was published online ahead of print in the Journal of Bacteriology.

This hypothesis is based in large part on observations of the number of roles bacteria are already known to play in host biology, as well as their relationship to the host system. "Bacteria both recognize and synthesize neuroendocrine hormones," Norris et al. write. "This has led to the hypothesis that microbes within the gut comprise a community that forms a microbial organ interfacing with the mammalian nervous system that innervates the gastrointestinal tract." (That nervous system innervating the GI tract is called the "enteric nervous system." It contains roughly half a billion neurons, compared with 85 billion neurons in the central nervous system.)

Active shooters in schools: Arming campus cops is elementary

Posted: December 19, 2012

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has decreed that campus police at Princeton University don't need guns. OSHA said in a June ruling that despite Princeton's policy of not allowing its campus police officers to carry firearms in the conduct of their duty, the university has complied with OHSA regulations to protect its law enforcement employees against occupational hazards.

Jim Lanzi, the Crime Prevention Coordinator for the Department of Public Safety at Princeton, filed an anonymous complaint (his identity was later revealed) against the school with OSHA in which he stated - rightly so in our view - that by not allowing campus police the ability to carry guns, the university has created a workplace safety hazard. But OHSA sided with the University's contention that "Princeton Township and Borough police will be there when needed and on-campus public safety officers still do not need guns," according to a report in the Times of Trenton.

The OSHA ruling is just the latest setback in a series of efforts by Lanzi, who as the FOP president represents two dozen officers whose job it is to patrol the picturesque private campus that lies about halfway between New York and Philadelphia. Lanzi had written letters to the administration, from the university president on down to managers and cabinet-level offices, but the president never replied and he'd received minimal response from anyone else he had petitioned on the matter.

Why Autism is Still With Us... And What Do We Do About It?

Posted: December 19, 2012

From over here in what's called "The North American Health Freedom Movement" we see Autism (and the other neurological disorders) as only two issues: (1) What's causing it, and how do we stop that? and (2) how do we repair the children and the families?

Both of these issues are solvable right this minute. We, as a society, know what causes them, and we know how to fix the children. So, what are we waiting for? Why hasn't this problem been solved?

Most of my readership is in what's been falsely labeled as "Alternative Medicine," when, for certain, there is nothing "alternative" about what they do. It is, in fact, "cutting-edge" health care that competes, quite clearly, offering a much better, and more successful philosophy than that which it competes with - the drug industry.

So, why then have I given so much attention, lately, to the problems of Autism and other neurological disorders?

EU Quashes Free Speech in Health Claims

Posted: December 18, 2012

Europe has rejected 95% of the health and nutrition claims under review. What does this mean for us?

The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) evaluated 2,037 health claims - that is, statements that a nutrient or food contributes to or has a positive impact on a particular health condition - and authorized the use of only 241 of them. Most of the ones accepted were related to structure or function claims, such as "calcium contributes to normal muscle function."

As we've reported previously, structure/function claims are statements that describe the role of a nutrient or dietary ingredient as it affects normal structure or function in humans. In the US, structure/function claims like "calcium builds strong bones" or "vitamin D boosts immune system function" are allowed, but one cannot legally cite the science showing that vitamin D prevents and treats the flu. The flu is considered a disease, so this is forbidden. With the EU's list, we see the same censorship at work, only more so.

Vaccine Not Approved for Pregnancy Is Pushed on Pregnant Women

Posted: December 14, 2012

The UK is currently on a massive campaign to pressure pregnant women into getting a pertussis vaccination. They say it will prevent whooping cough after their babies are born.

What they don't tell pregnant women is that the vaccine's manufacturer clearly states in the insert that it's not for use on pregnant women.

Here's what the UK's Department of Health has to say about pregnancy and the Repevax vaccine[1]:

Women who become pregnant again while the programme is in place should be offered immunisation during each pregnancy to maximise the level of antibodies that they pass on to their infants. Pregnant women who have received immunisation against pertussis, tetanus, diphtheria and/or polio relatively recently should be offered immunisation. Cumulative doses may increase the likelihood of injection site reactions or fever, but this is far outweighed by the expected benefits.

Vaccines are losing popularity as more and more parents are refusing

Posted: December 14, 2012

Vaccines have long been termed as the most effective way of battling any disease. For more than a century, people have been vaccinated in order to prevent the outbreak of diseases.

Whether or not they have been able to prevent any disease at all is matter of
controversy but one thing is certain, they always create more complications
than actually preventing diseases. Natural News has long advocated to
abjure those vaccines that contain harmful chemicals like mercury and that
campaign seems to be producing results now.

It has been reported that more and more parents in Australia are refusing to vaccinate their children with vaccines that supposedly contain toxins. This has taken the authorities by surprise and they are relentless in their efforts to continue with the
vaccination programs that are perfectly designed to ruin human health. These
vaccination programs earn huge profits for pharmaceutical companies and hence
the government always wants to move ahead with the programs at any cost.

Australian Medical Association along with Academy of Science has published a
propaganda journal of 20 pages in order to term any science against toxic
vaccines as myth.

New EPA air quality standards reduce air pollution by 20 percent

Posted: December 14, 2012

WASHINGTON (AP) - In its first major regulation since the election, the Obama administration on Friday imposed a new air quality standard that reduces by 20 percent the maximum amount of soot released into the air from smokestacks, diesel trucks and other sources of pollution.

Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Lisa Jackson said the new standard will save thousands of lives each year and reduce the burden of illness in communities across the country, as people "benefit from the simple fact of being able to breathe cleaner air."

As a mother of two sons who have battled asthma, Jackson said she was pleased that "more mothers like me will be able to rest a little easier knowing their children, and their children's children, will have cleaner air to breathe for decades to come."

A sick world: We live longer, with more pain and illness

Posted: December 13, 2012

(Reuters) - The world has made huge progress fighting killer infectious diseases, but as a result we now lead longer and sicker lives, with health problems that cause us years of pain, disability and mental distress.

This "devastating irony", as researchers describe it, is the main conclusion of a five-year study that forms the most comprehensive assessment of global health in the history of medicine, according to the journal publishingthe research.

The Global Burden of Disease study, led by the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation (IHME) at Washington University, finds that countries face a wave of financial and social costs from rising numbers of people living with disease and injury.

Among other findings are that while malnutrition has dropped down the rankings as a cause of death and illness, the effects of excessive eating are taking its place. Smoking and alcohol use have also overtaken child hunger to become the second and third leading health risks, behind high blood pressure.

Pfizer to launch animal-health unit IPO in early 2013, may raise $4 billion: WSJ

Posted: December 13, 2012

(Reuters) - Pfizer Inc's planned U.S. initial public offering (IPO) of its animal-health unit Zoetis Inc is likely by January or February and raise about $4 billion, the Wall Street Journal reported, citing people familiar with the discussions.

The sources told the paper a final decision on the offering would depend on market conditions.

The largest U.S. drug-maker believed that an IPO is the way to go for Zoetis, as the unit's hoped-for $20 billion valuation has priced it out of the range of potential strategic buyers, the Journal said.

Pfizer said in June that it planned to separate its animal-health unit, which sells medicines, vaccines and other products for livestock and pets, into a standalone company.

Zoetis makes Palladia, the first drug to be approved by the FDA for treating cancer in dogs, and has developed the first swine vaccine for pandemic H1N1 Influenza Virus in the United States.

California health officials sound alarm over hookah smoking

Posted: December 13, 2012

(Reuters) - California public health officials warned on Thursday of a sharp rise in tobacco smoking from hookahs, and a proliferation of cafes and lounges offering the Middle Eastern-style water pipes, which experts say can be at least as harmful as cigarettes.

Hookah smoking among Californians jumped more than 40 percent between 2005 and 2008, said Dr. Ron Chapman, the state director of public health, citing a 2011 state tobacco survey published in the American Journal of Public Health.

He said the trend was particularly pronounced among college-age adults, with nearly a quarter of men 18 to 24 years old reporting they had used a hookah at least once, according to the same study.

Proof that Childhood Vaccinations Are a Hoax

Posted: December 13, 2012

It's taken as an article of faith that vaccinations have improved our lifespan. Most of us take our children to the doctors for their injections without question. Most think of themselves as bad parents if they don't. It's simply one of those things that aren't questioned, as if it's obvious. It's gone so far now that parents have been threatened with prison and their children are coerced into vaccinations.

This article exposes the reality: As documented by the American Medical Association's own Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) in the January 1999 issue, there is no connection between death from infectious diseases and vaccinations. That's right. None.

First, let's look at the dates for when vaccinations were first introduced in the United States, according to the Centers for Disease Control:

Measles (one of the Ms of the MMR vaccination): 1963
Mumps (the other M of the MMR vaccination): 1967
Diphtheria (the D of the DPT vaccination): First licensed in 1921, but not widely used until the 1930's.

A Breath Test For Detecting Cancer?

Posted: December 12, 2012

Your breath may hold clues to a lot more than what you ate for lunch.

In the small study of less than 80 participants published in the British Journal of Surgery, researchers from the the University Aldo Moro of Bari in Italy found a profile of breath-based chemicals that are linked to colorectal cancer. The scientists collected exhaled breath from 37 patients with colorectal cancer and 41 healthy control participants, and evaluated them for volatile organic compounds (VOCs) that could be red flags for cancer. According to the researchers, cancer tissues operate differently compared to non-cancerous cells and may release a distinct chemical signature.

People can get a deadly vaccine as a reward for surrendering guns!

Posted: December 12, 2012

It is absurd but it is true that the authorities of Worcester, Massachusetts have proposed a preposterous plan of awarding citizens with free flu vaccines for surrendering their guns. It is a part of the annual "Goods for Guns Buyback Program" in the city. The authorities now look forward to making this program successful. Disarming the American public has long been a desire of the U.S.president and this program will be organized solely to fulfill that desire. But the most absurd thing is that people who will turn in their firearms will be given flu vaccines full of harmful chemicals deemed safe by big pharmaceutical companies.

This program is designed to ruin the American public both economically and medically. First of all, the flu vaccines, laden with harmful chemicals, are going to take a heavy toll on the health of the general public. Though government agencies and pharmaceutical companies claim that these vaccines are absolutely safe, Natural News reports that they are perfectly designed to keep people in a state of perpetual illness. These vaccines are infested with harmful chemicals that can give rise to serious diseases.

New SARS-Like Virus Infects Both Humans and Animals

Posted: December 12, 2012

A SARS-like virus discovered this summer in the Middle East may infect more than just humans. The pathogen, a close cousin to the one that caused the 2002 to 2003 SARS outbreak, may also be able to infect cells from pigs and a wide range of bat species, researchers report today. The findings may help public health officials track the source of the outbreak and identify the role of wild animals and livestock in spreading the virus, researchers say.

Scientists first detected the virus in a 60-year-old man from Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, who developed severe pneumonia this past spring. Unable to identify the microbe causing the illness, doctors sent samples to Erasmus MC in Rotterdam, the Netherlands. There, scientists identified the infectious agent as a coronavirus, a group known to cause many ailments, such as the common cold and a variety of gastrointestinal infections. Cases have popped up in Qatar and Jordan as well; in total, researchers have so far confirmed nine infections, including five deaths. Several other cases are suspected but haven't been confirmed.

Researchers have fully sequenced the virus, which they dubbed hCoV-EMC (short for human coronavirus-Erasmus Medical Center). The genome revealed that it is closely related to the SARS coronavirus.

Stand up for open and transparent elections!

Join us in standing up for open and transparent elections - join us in reporting "statistical anomalies" and 6 million votes for Prop 37!

While reports of election fraud have circulated on the Internet, at Food Democracy Now! we have been closely monitoring the results as they've come in and had not heard any credible reports of possible voting irregularities - until now.

Yesterday, we received some disturbing news from a voter integrity monitor, claiming that possible "statistical anomalies" had been detected in 9 counties in California.

According to Francois Choquette, a statistician closely monitoring incoming election results in California, there were significant "irregularities" in the vote totals for prop 37 to label genetically engineered foods that could not be explained by random coincidence.
